Light.light.light

Last Thursday we were given our new project entitled 'Make Nothing'

The project is based on using light to create an object/form rather than materials.

I started experimenting using straws, mirrors, glass, textiles and broken bits of coloured and textured perspex.

A lot of my experimentation links to the painted photographs produced by artist Kim Weston. I found her linear silhouettes to be highly inspiration and attempted by own variations, adding colour and interest using coloured plastics and glass filled with water. Some of my experimentations are visible below.

From this I want to start looking at different methods of dying and printing fabrics to see if I can get similar effects on textiles. I remember watching Victorian Farm and seeing a Victorian method of marbling paper that used to be used for wrapping paper and book covers so might try and attempt that...or possibly revert back to good old nostalgia and use dyes in soapy water and bubble it up like we used to do in preschool to get the print...oh the possibilities!

and.I.can.sleep.again

Thursday signified not only the end of the college week but also the end of the Haptic Project. After a very hectic week resulting in 3 hours of sleep on Wednesday night...or should I say Thursday morning I can happily say PDA is OVER! I managed to create a small collection of haptic bras ranging in materials from paper to fimo to an old russell and bromley loafer.

For the photo shoot I used a projector to create a reflective silhouette of my gorgeous model on the backing wall.

On to the next project now...

haptic.haptikos

Well, new year, new start.
At the moment, relentless workings on the 'haptic project' in fashion accessories.
Happy to say it's all coming together. Finally!
Inspiration.
Animals. In particular horns, bones, skin and feathers.
I started by working with paper, in particular cutting out, folding and layering repeat forms.
Delicate work.

Paul Cocksedge, Styrene 2003

Assa Ashuach, OMI.mgx light, 2004

Mathias Bengtsson, Prototype for spun carbon fibre chaise, 2002

I found these as well as a number of other designers in the design library of the design museum.

Some really interesting work.

the.painted.veil

About a month ago I watched The Painted Veil with my sister and if one thing has stuck with me, apart from the ridiculously unfulfilling ending to the film (seriously what the...!), was Naomi Watts' character 'Kitty Fane'. The main appeal I think is drawn from my already avid obsession with the 1920's as well as the character Kitty herself. I love the delicate and feminine fabrics and pastel colours she wears and also what the clothes represent. An age of rebellion, gaiety and experimentation. Love it!

home.in.your.pocket

Just received a new brief entitled 'Home-Pocket' which explores our personal context and symbolism of home.

When I think of my for example Mum synesthesia takes over and my memories float into a mist of Armani, Chanel Chance and Gucci Rush 2.

After initial research into what, where and who I considered to be 'home' I started to think about how a pocket could be incorporated into contour design. I began to play around with paper, seeing how different forms of pockets could be created. My final design is inspired by children's literature, including the likes of Beatrix Potter and A.A.Milne, as well as trinkets and keepsakes. The bra design is made from vacuum-formed plastic, paper mache, wire, vintage crocheted lace and a handcrafted back fastening.

I've started to develop more designs using paper and fimo. Must say the fimo makes me reminiscent of childhood, in particular those little Paint n' Bake fridge magnets you used to get, the fairy ones being a personal favourite of mine.

My main focus of inspiration is still bones, horns and skin. Loving Margarete Palz use of photo paper as fabric which could be quite interesting to

So far not exactly sure whether to create one final piece or if I should create a collection...
